The Swiss city of Winterthur is busy shaping its future

Visionary City Development

The former locomotive production factory known as „Loki“ in the middle of Winterthur is being redeveloped as a residential and commercial complex. The new buildings will house 211 appartments as well as various trade and retail facilities. Thanks to its central inner city location, the area is very easily accessible. Sustainable development is an important issue, following the strict Swiss “Minergie®” energy saving standard. Three new buildings are arranged around a spacious inner park. The varying building layouts required a meticulous approach to formwork and workflow planning.

Special board-style concrete finish in the staircase

The architects required a special board-style concrete surface in the staircase. This was achieved effectively and quickly by mounting a one-off plywood sheet onto the Mammut 350 wall formwork panels. The photo belows shows the dramatic effect achieved this way.

On site always on the safe side

The side opted for all-round safety provision during the entire building process. This included equipping the wall formwork Mammut 350 with the modular safety system SecuritBasic. It offers an all-around fall protection, safe and comfortable working platforms and access ladders. The push-pull props are attached to the back of the walkway bracket. They do not project from the working platform or planking, thus avoiding tripping obstacles.

Flexible adaptation to layouts

MevaDec slab formwork mastered the changing building layouts with a minimum of filler areas since it is not restricted to any fixed grid, making slab works easy and fast.

Poject manager Sander Thijssen of BAM Swiss AG says: “Particularly´the solution with plywood facing mounted onto the Mammut 350 to achieve the board-style concrete finish worked very well.“

One of Ontario’s busiest transportation corridors, Highway 400, began a major expansion project through Kings Township in late 2016. This $79.3 million dollar (CAD) project includes the widening of the highway from three to six lanes in each direction for a two mile stretch and also entails safer on and off ramps, the expansion and realignment of culverts, and the replacement of two bridges − one of them the South Canal Bridge.
